Domain Mastery: The New Standard for Expertise

AI is not just challenging what experts do, it is structurally undermining their influence.

For most of their careers, senior professionals have built their power and influence on a specific kind of advantage. They knew more than the people around them. Not everything about their field. Enough more than those who depended on them to maintain a gap that was costly to close.

That gap was the foundation of their authority. Those around them, whether clients, colleagues, or executives, could not easily challenge what they did not have the knowledge to question. The expert’s power held because the dependant’s ability to probe it was limited.

AI has changed that directly and practically.

What is happening in the room

The people sitting around the expert now have access to something they did not have before. Not expertise of their own. Something more disruptive than that. The ability to generate informed challenges at the edges of the expert’s knowledge, quickly, credibly, and without sustained study.

Where the expert was once questioned in general terms, they are now being tested with precision. Not ‘are you sure about that?’ but ‘that may be right, but what about this specific counterargument, how does this body of research bear on it, what would your position be if this variable changes?’ Questions formed with AI assistance that the questioner could not previously have constructed.

For the expert whose command of their subject was built on relative advantage rather than complete command, this is a new and uncomfortable exposure. The edges of their knowledge are visible in ways they have not been before. Their influence in the room begins to shift.

Some are sitting with that discomfort, saying less, losing ground they cannot account for. Others are doubling down, defending positions with more force, without understanding what the structural problem actually is.

Neither response addresses what is actually happening.

What the situation requires

The expert’s power and influence rested on an implicit assurance. Those around them trusted that the expert had the territory covered. That trust discouraged further probing. It was the assurance itself, more than any individual answer, that protected the position.

What the current moment is exposing is whether that assurance was ever fully warranted. For many, it was not. The position was built on knowing enough, not on knowing completely. That distinction did not matter when those around them lacked the means to find the edges. It matters now.

The instinctive response is to fill the gaps as they are exposed. A question lands that cannot be answered with confidence, and the expert goes away and patches that specific territory. It feels like the right response. It addresses what just happened. But it does not address what is actually happening. The gaps are not the problem. The relationship with the field that produced them is.

What domain mastery is

Domain mastery is not expertise taken further in the conventional sense. It is a different relationship with a field entirely.

The domain master holds complete command of the full terrain. Every significant idea the field has produced. Every school of thought that shaped it. The points where established thinking remains unresolved and why. That map is held not as accumulated information but as genuinely absorbed understanding, tested against real conditions over time.

With that map held, the domain master can navigate to any point in the field when a problem demands it. The edges that AI-assisted challengers can reach are already within their territory. There is no higher ground available. The position cannot be outflanked.

Complete command of a field also produces a different quality of thought. Patterns become visible that are invisible from inside a narrower territory. Original thinking becomes possible not as an occasional occurrence but as a natural consequence of holding the full terrain simultaneously. That capacity to see what others cannot see, including what the most sophisticated analytical tools currently available cannot see, is what makes the power and influence that flows from genuine mastery durable in a way that relative advantage never was.

This is the emerging new standard for experts and expertise. Not relative advantage, reliably maintained over dependants who lacked the means to challenge it. Genuine command of the full terrain, held with the confidence that no AI-assisted challenge can reach ground the domain master has not already covered.

The professionals who recognise this earliest are not waiting for the exposure to deepen. They are already asking a different question from the one most of their peers are still trying to answer. And in doing so, they are also the best prepared for what is coming next. Domain mastery is not the destination. It is the strongest position from which to navigate what the next three to five years will require. What that is remains a separate question. But it cannot be asked from a position of relative advantage

When Executive Coaching Stops Being Enough

Executive coaching built a profession on a need that predates it. AI is now exposing what the profession was actually delivering, and what it was not.

A Framework Born From the Journey

A personal account of how sustained exploration, systems thinking, and a deliberate refusal to follow the established path produced something the academic field has long struggled to deliver: a complete, immediately usable framework for senior professionals navigating a world in structural disruption.

What Organisations Lose When Domain Mastery Is Mistaken for Expertise

Organisations are replacing high-cost experts with AI-generated knowledge and believing they have found a more efficient arrangement. Some of them have. Others have made a more costly mistake than they yet realise.

The Commoditisation of Expert Power

Expert power rested on a gap. That gap is not gone. But closing it has never been easier, and more people are doing it every day.

Why Expert Knowledge Has a Shorter Shelf Life Than It Used To

Experts are watching their influence erode without understanding why. The problem is not what they know. It is what their knowledge is now worth to the people around them.

The Career Position That Looks Secure and Is Not

Being busy is not the same as being safe. The most exposed senior professionals are usually the ones who do not see the danger.

The Collapsing Equilibrium: The Unseen Power Dynamic Is Shifting

The information asymmetries that gave senior experts and executives their power are being eroded simultaneously. Most will not see it coming until a colleague who did has already taken their position.

When Expertise Stops Commanding the Room

Senior professionals are losing ground in rooms they once commanded without effort. The cause is structural, the response instinctive, and this response is making it worse.

Domain Mastery Is Where Original Thought Begins

AI has made expertise retrievable. It has not made original thought reachable. Only one cognitive position produces it reliably, and very few professionals are close to occupying it.

When the Executive No Longer Needs the Explanation

The executive who once relied on the expert to navigate complex terrain is becoming better equipped to navigate it alone. Nothing personal, it is structural, and it is changing where power sits.
