When Freedom Demands Discipline

Here at Radical Conformity, I’m always vigilant for ideas from like-minded souls and thought-provoking perspectives on the state of civilisation.

An essay by Dark Age Sage, who writes Tales from Thule, titled Liberal Boomers Are Savage Tribals,‘ caught my attention this week – and it elicited this reflection from me:

There’s real truth in this. Civilisation doesn’t collapse overnight – it erodes through indulgence and the loss of restraint.
The world doesn’t need a return to dogma – but it does need a return to discipline, a shared moral foundation built on humanity rather than religion.
Without common principles, freedom becomes chaos – and conscience becomes optional.

This line of thinking is a great example of why a philosophy such as Radical Conformity is needed – a reminder that real freedom begins not with rebellion, but with mastery of self.

Here’s a brief summary of the key ideas explored in Liberal Boomers Are Savage Tribals‘:

  • Loss of impulse control: The essay opens with Dune’s ‘Gom Jabbar’ test as a metaphor for civilisation – true humanity lies in mastering instinct, not obeying it.
  • The 1960s as a moral turning point: Counterculture replaced discipline with indulgence and rebellion against all authority and tradition.
  • The rise of new taboos: Modern liberalism built its own superstitions – “isms” and “phobias” – enforced through social fear rather than reason.
  • Collapse of foresight: A culture obsessed with the present lost its ability to think long-term; impulse now governs politics and personal life alike.
  • The need for discipline and shared principles: Without self-control, society reverts to tribalism – fragmented, emotional, and easily led.

It’s a challenging, sometimes abrasive piece, but one that raises an important question:

How do we recover discipline without returning to dogma – and build a shared morality grounded in our common humanity?
